PalmaSTEI has denounced that the Department of Education and Universities is applying "improper" salary reductions to teachers who have been granted leave for legal guardianship. As the union has verified in the payrolls of the affected teachers, the Administration is deducting the salary corresponding to five hours per week, even though the reduction in working hours they have been granted is one non-teaching hour per day. The trade union organization maintains that this measure represents, in reality, a reduction of four hours per week of the working day, and not five, as applied by the Department. Therefore, it considers that the salary deductions do not correspond to the reduction in hours that the affected workers are entitled to.
3% less
According to STEI's calculations, the difference translates into an additional 3% cut in the monthly salary, regardless of whether the teacher has a child under three years old or older. In the latter case, instead of receiving 88% of the salary, the affected workers receive 85%. The economic impact is also significant. The union calculates that a teacher with two six-year periods of service may stop receiving nearly 100 gross euros each month, an amount that rises to 1,210 euros annually. To this loss, the 3% discount on extraordinary payments must be added.
STEI criticizes the Department for financially penalizing teachers who take advantage of this leave with a salary reduction equivalent to one more hour per week. The union describes the events as "very serious," especially given the cost of living in the Balearic Islands. Finally, the organization considers it "unacceptable" that the Administration promotes family reconciliation and negotiates leave for workers while, at the same time, applying salary cuts for exercising this right.
