The waiting list to be operated grows by 18% in the Balearic Islands and reaches 116 days

PalmaThe surgical waiting list continues to grow in the Balearic Islands. A total of 17,585 people were waiting at the end of August for a surgical intervention in the public hospitals of the Islands, 17.8% more than a year ago. In parallel, the average time patients have to wait to go to the operating room has been set at 116.04 days, almost four months and with an increase of 8.4% compared to August 2025, according to data from IB-Salut updated on August 31. The trend is particularly worrying among patients with the longest waiting times. Currently, 3,367 people have been awaiting surgery for more than six months, 40.4% more than a year ago. In addition, 1,481 patients have been waiting between five and six months to be operated on. This latter group has also increased compared to August 2025, specifically by 18.6%.

The situation varies depending on the hospital center. Son Espases concentrates the highest number of patients awaiting surgery, with 6,936 people. It is followed by Son Llàtzer, with 3,479; Can Misses, with 1,908; Hospital de Manacor, with 1,836; Mateu Orfila de Menorca, with 1,754; Hospital d'Inca, with 1,616; and Hospital de Formentera, with 30.

Therefore, the rebound in waiting lists is not limited to the surgical field. The number of people waiting to be seen by a specialist also increases. On August 31, there were 96,999, almost 97,000, 16.8% more than a year earlier. The average delay to access a first consultation with a specialist has reached 66.98 days, 3.7% more than a year ago.

Within this list, 41,468 people have been waiting for a first visit with a specialist for more than two months, a figure that represents a 24.5% interannual increase. There are also 344 patients who have accumulated more than a year of waiting to be seen in a specialized consultation.
