PalmaLast-minute agreement between the PP and Vox regarding Senate candidacies in 23 provinces with the goal of maximizing results. Among them, the Balearic Islands, where Vox has already announced it will not run in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. By virtue of the pact, the PP will cede the number two spot on the ballot for Mallorca to Vox.
Although both Alberto Núñez-Feijóo and the PP spokesperson in Parliament and number one on the Senate list, Sebastià Sagreras, considered the left-wing coalition for the Senate to be a sign of "weakness," the Popular Party has ultimately reached a pact with Vox. "It is a collaboration agreement, not an electoral coalition," justified the number one on the list for Congress, José Vicente Marí Bosó: "We are not diluting our brand." Thus, he considered that the left-wing parties form "a coalition of losers".
"In the face of Pedro Sánchez's attempt to assault the institutions, in this case the Senate, and hand-in-hand with extremists and radicals, Vox has called for responsibility and high-mindedness," the party explains in the statement. "We will make a gesture that consists of withdrawing six constituencies and presenting a single candidate for the Senate in fourteen," it continues.
Thus, the party has pointed out that "Vox will not present its own candidacy" in the provinces of Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cadiz, Valencia, Castellon, and the Balearic Islands. Likewise, it will present a single candidate in another 14 provinces of the State, while in the remaining 23 they will present themselves normally. The PP, on the other hand, will withdraw the candidacy in three provinces where it has never obtained representation: Tarragona, Girona, and Gipuzkoa.
"The PP and Vox are very different political formations, with very different discourses, but it is no secret that we coincide in the need to expel Sánchez's criminal organization from the institutions," adds the document addressed to the media.
The news arrived a few minutes after the appearance of the spokespersons of the PP and Vox parliamentary groups in the Islands, Marga Duran and Manuela Cañadas, who assured that they knew nothing about it and that everything would depend on the negotiations that took place in Madrid between Génova and Bambú. This Monday, the deadline for submitting the lists for the Senate to the Central Electoral Board (JEC) ends.
Although the PP spokesperson, Sebastià Sagreras, said days ago that a joint list of the PSIB with Ara Més-Front Ampli for the Senate evidenced the "weakness" of the left, he will now be the head of the list for the right-wing agreement to run for the Senate. On the other hand, Carmen Ferrer will occupy the number one spot in Ibiza, Ramón Sintes in Menorca and Vicent Tur, at the head of the Sa Unió coalition in Formentera, for this island.
On the part of Vox, Cañadas has considered that "Vox will be up to the task, and so far there is no further news". "I don't know how it will end, negotiations will be ongoing in Madrid until the last minute", he assured: "Whatever they decide will be the best to preserve democracy and so that the left, with its union, does not try to steal the Senate".
The PSIB: "We are working to continue with a progressive country"
The deputy secretary-general of the PSIB and socialist candidate for the presidency of the Government, Rosario Sánchez, has defended the left-wing pact. "We are working to continue with a progressive country that advances, one that combines economic growth and progress in rights," she defended: "We do this when we govern and when we run in elections." In this sense, she has vindicated the victory of Lula da Silva in Brazil. "We do not want to return to fascist Spain, and that is why electoral coalitions are important," she concluded.
