MahonAbout 400 anti-fascist activists demonstrated today against the presence of Vox leader Santiago Abascal at a rally in Mahón. Despite having overcome several police checkpoints, the protesters did not manage to interrupt the event.
The participants, summoned by members of the CGT union and two city organizations, initially gathered at Rochina Park, at the port, where the protest was authorized. Subsequently, they advanced up the stairs towards the surroundings of Plaça de la Conquesta, where the rally was being held.
Shouting 'Here are the anti-fascists' and equipped with whistles, banners, and some republican and Palestinian flags, the protesters overcame several National Police checkpoints. The officers were forced to retreat, despite the arrival of more police vans and riot control units.
Once at the Plaça de la Constitució, a few meters from the rally, riot police blocked the protesters' path, who responded with shouts and slogans against the president of Vox.
'Abascal, national shame', they chanted repeatedly, while encouraging other people to join the protest and proclaiming their intention to turn Menorca into the "tomb of fascism".
The police fired rubber bullets
Finally, the Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the protesters and allow Abascal and his entourage to leave the scene escorted by the officers.
Following this, a hundred attendees at the rally, carrying Spanish and Vox flags, verbally confronted the protesters, while the officers positioned themselves between the two groups.
To the shouts of the former against Pedro Sánchez, the latter responded with proclamations against Abascal.
The Police established a security cordon to facilitate the departure of those attending the Vox rally.
Abascal accuses Sánchez of using the protesters to intimidate his supporters
The president of Vox has criticized the protests against his party's electoral events in various parts of the State and has accused the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of using protesters to intimidate his supporters.
"Who are all these people that Pedro Sánchez uses to scare Spaniards?", Abascal asked during his speech in the Menorcan capital.
"Violence will not serve them either. They will soon realize it, and when they see that it does not work, I suppose they will leave us in peace for the rest of the electoral campaign," he stated.
Abascal also accused the PSOE of resorting to violence, "smokescreens," and jokes to divert attention from what he considers cases of corruption surrounding the Spanish Prime Minister and the party's electoral failures.
