More for Menorca demands Lafuente's urgent appearance for the "scandals" of Costes
The Menorcan eco-sovereignists demand explanations for the dismissal of María Joaquina Ferrer and the letter from 21 civil servants in defense of the former director general
PalmaMés per Menorca has registered in Parliament an urgent request for the appearance of the Minister of the Sea and the Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, due to the "successive scandals" affecting his department. The party demands explanations, especially following the "dismissal of the Director General of Coasts, María Joaquina Ferrer, and the subsequent revelations by the former official about the alleged "political interference" by the minister in the reports and files of the General Directorate.
Més per Menorca also focuses on the letter published by 21 civil servants of the Ministry in defense of Ferrer and the technical and legal criteria applied during her tenure at the head of the General Directorate. "It evidences a very worrying situation that requires immediate explanations from the highest political authority of the Ministry," points out the eco-sovereignist party. Més considers it particularly serious that a director general was dismissed after disagreeing with the minister on how to resolve certain files and that, subsequently, "such a large group of civil servants considers it necessary to publicly defend her actions".
The spokesperson for Més per Menorca, Josep Castells, has argued that Ferrer's dismissal would already justify his appearance. "If a few days ago we received the news that the Director General of Coasts had been dismissed because she did not want to yield to the minister's political indications and wanted technical and legal criteria from the Ministry's staff to prevail, this situation would already justify an appearance in itself," he said.
Castells considers that the case generates "very serious doubts" about the department's functioning and the way in which files are processed. According to the spokesperson, the situation would suggest that "criteria are applied in the Ministry according to particular interests" and that the files are not being resolved according to technical and legal criteria.
The spokesperson for Més per Menorca has also described as "unusual" that 21 civil servants have made public a letter to defend the dismissed Director General and question the explanations given about her departure. "The fact that 21 civil servants are speaking out to defend a dismissed person and to denounce that the publicly stated reasons for the dismissal are highly credible," he assured.
Given all this, Més per Menorca considers it "essential" to activate parliamentary control mechanisms and demands that Lafuente's appearance be made urgently, ideally in the first plenary session of the new session period, scheduled for September 8. Castells has announced that the party does not rule out seeking the support of the other parliamentary groups to ensure that the appearance is made sooner and that an extraordinary plenary session is convened to address the Ministry's situation.
