PalmaMaría Dolores Rial de la Calle was appointed this Tuesday as Lieutenant Prosecutor of the Balearic Islands Public Prosecutor's Office. Specialized in the fight against drug trafficking, the prosecutor claimed during the appointment ceremony the public service nature of the profession and the collective work it entails: "We serve the citizenry and this exercise is not done alone; we do it with all our colleagues."

Rial de la Calle thanked the trust and affection of her colleagues at the Balearic Islands Public Prosecutor's Office, an institution she recalled that, before joining, it was pointed out to her as peculiar because of the good environment that stood out there. She also recalled that it was within this institution where she was taught to practice the profession and where she found support to resolve doubts and face complex procedures, "at all times, they were willing to help me with doubts, problems, or other difficult situations that our trade requires," she said. In this sense, she claimed the principles and values of those who have accompanied her throughout her career, as well as the responsibility they have towards the citizenry, with the goal that the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Islands continues to be a benchmark.

The prosecutor explained that when she entered the judicial career, she thought she would stay for a while in Mallorca, her first destination, and then move to the Peninsula, but she acknowledged that Mallorca and its people made her stay: "They made a place for me among them," she said, referring both to her professional colleagues and to Mallorcan society. Her specialization as an anti-drug prosecutor has allowed her to collaborate closely with the security forces and bodies, a job she has championed for its importance in assessing and prosecuting criminal activity linked to drug trafficking. Rial de la Calle also warned of the growing complexity of this field, which goes beyond trafficking and presents increasingly greater difficulties that affect almost all sectors of society, as it influences the family, personal, and economic spheres, among others.

A 17-year career in the Islands

Rial de la Calle entered the prosecutorial career in 2009 as a prosecutor, graduating first in her class. Since then, she has developed her entire professional career at the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Balearic Islands. In 2021, she was appointed delegate prosecutor of the Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office for the island of Ibiza and, in 2024, she assumed this same responsibility for Mallorca. The State Prosecutor General, Teresa Peramato, has highlighted her experience in the fight against drug trafficking, especially in highly complex proceedings, with numerous investigated persons and proceedings that lead to high-stakes oral trials against criminal organizations with transnational ramifications.

According to Peramato, this specialization requires high technical knowledge, which Rial de la Calle has demonstrated over the years with professional rigor and a high level of legal expertise. The prosecutor has been awarded the Civil Guard Merit Medal with a white badge. During her speech, Rial de la Calle also dedicated words of gratitude to her family, especially her mother and her husband, whom she stated have been fundamental in her professional journey: "Without them, I would not be here".
