The Balearic Sea registers temperature records in 25 of the last 39 days
The water temperature has been the highest recorded for these dates on 64% of the days since the beginning of July
PalmaThe Balearic Sea has registered the highest temperature for these dates on 25 of the 39 days between July 1 and August 8, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
This means that during 64% of the days in this period, the surface temperature of the sea reached the highest value in the historical series for the same day of the year, a series that dates back, at least, to 1940.
The data confirms the persistence of an exceptionally high marine temperature during a large part of the summer. It is not a single, isolated peak, but rather a prolonged period in which the Balearic Sea has been consecutively setting maximum records for the corresponding dates.
Aemet's historical series shows that the surface temperature of the Balearic Sea has been monitored since 1940 over a maritime area of approximately 56,000 square kilometers. The agency had already documented exceptional records in this area in previous years.
On August 11, 2022, for example, the average temperature reached 29.3ºC, the historical maximum up to that point, according to Aemet.
The evolution of this summer thus adds to a trend of high marine temperature that the agency has been observing in recent years. The persistence of records for weeks is especially significant because the value for each day is compared with what had been historically recorded on that same date.
Aemet has a series of observations of the surface temperature of the Balearic Sea that allows for comparing the current daily evolution with data accumulated since 1940.
