ManacorThe Court of Instruction number 1 of Manacor has ordered the provisional dismissal of the case opened against the mayor of Felanitx, Catalina Soler (Popular Party), in relation to a complaint filed by a local police officer accusing her of resistance, disobedience, and threats during an incident that occurred last July. According to the court order, the court considers that it has not been sufficiently proven that Soler committed any crime, and therefore the case has been provisionally dismissed. The complaint, which had generated some controversy in the municipality, stemmed from a personal and professional conflict between the mayor and one of the local police officers, after the officer wrote an internal report stating that Soler had threatened him during the Portocolom Wine Festival last July.

The police officer's accusations included statements from the mayor such as "Fuck you, I'll send you to an office," and an attempt at disobedience and resisting authority. The mayor, however, always categorically denied the allegations and claimed, on the contrary, that she became the target of sexist comments and gestures from the officer, as well as various remarks that, according to Soler, referred to "women's sexual attitudes." In her statement to the media on July 22, Soler explained that, a few days after the complaint, the officer came to her office to warn her that he had written a report accusing her and that he intended to take the case to the Public Prosecutor's Office. The mayor also explained that the officer had already expressed his displeasure with his reassignment after failing an exam to be promoted to inspector. According to Soler, the officer also sent him a WhatsApp message a year ago, expressing regret that he had appointed someone else as chief inspector and alleging that he was being coerced.

The incident

The incident in question occurred during the Portocolom Wine Fest on Saturday, July 12th of this year. At one point during the evening, the mayor went to investigate what was happening on a nearby street, where someone had reportedly passed out from alcohol poisoning. There, she encountered Local Police Officer Miquel Sastre. "Miquel, I haven't seen you all day," she began.

After a series of exchanges regarding the amount of wine Soler had allegedly consumed, the mayor of Felanitx claims that, jokingly, she told him that he "should be mentioned to 'Carreixeta,'" her family nickname. The officer asked if she was threatening him, to which she replied no, adding, "We're celebrating, Miguelete."

This is when Soler says the agent began making sexist comments, including, according to her, derogatory remarks about "women's sexual attitudes," which she did not specify to the press.

As a consequence of that night, both the officer and 'Carreixeta' filed cross-complaints. Soler also took the case to the Public Prosecutor's Office, both for the "very serious" events of that night and for an alleged disclosure of secrets and leak of the subsequent complaint by the officer and the Socialist Dami Massutí. It is also worth noting the parallel opening of an internal investigation within the Local Police to clarify the incident. Despite pressure from opposition parties, Soler has reiterated throughout these months that he does not intend to resign. "You never abandon ship, no matter the storm," he has stated. The court's decision to provisionally dismiss the case has brought some relief to the Felanitx government team; however, the case is not definitively closed, as the parties involved can still file appeals.
