The GOB and Terraferida urge to "take the fresh air" to demand answers from the Government one month after June 26th

PalmaThe GOB and Terraferida have called on citizens to take to the streets again this Saturday, August 29, for the Madò Farta event, an action that aims to revive the Mallorcan tradition of "taking the cool air" as a protest against tourist and urban overcrowding.

The environmental organizations have expressed their support for the initiative and have denounced that, a month after the 'Mallorca al límit' (Mallorca at the limit) demonstration, the main institutions of the Islands have still not given any response to the demands put forward by the more than 70,000 people who, according to the organizations, participated in the mobilization on July 26.

The GOB and Terraferida requested meetings after the protest with the President of the Government, Marga Prohens, and with the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, to convey the citizens' demands and present them with an initial package of measures. According to the organizations, however, neither of the two institutions has shown any willingness to open this space for dialogue so far.

"It is no longer time to make more diagnoses"

Therefore, the organizations consider that Saturday's mobilization is a new opportunity to remember that "Mallorca is at its limit" and to demand a political response. "There is no longer time to make more diagnoses," they point out. GOB and Terraferida call on the Government and the Council to leave excuses behind and "take action" with concrete measures. Among the proposals they put forward are declaring all of the Balearic Islands a stressed residential market area, decreeing a moratorium on new tourist rental licenses, and beginning to reduce the number of places available. They also call for a moratorium on new urban planning licenses on rural land, a review of the regulations that, according to the entities, have weakened territorial protection, and a transformation of the island's mobility model.

In terms of mobility, they propose prioritizing public transport, establishing a limit on the number of vehicles that can circulate in Mallorca, promoting the railway network, and renouncing new road expansions. The package of measures also includes actions against climate change, with the approval of strategic mitigation and adaptation frameworks; water management adapted to available resources and aimed at reducing demand; and a strategy to strengthen Mallorca's food autonomy through the protection of agricultural land and support for local production.

According to GOB and Terraferida, these six actions would not solve all the island's problems on their own, but they would represent "a clear change of direction" and demonstrate political will to respond to the demands expressed in the streets. The entities consider that the more than 70,000 people who participated in the demonstration on July 26 "continue to await a response" and call on the Government and the Council to listen to the message. "Institutional silence is no longer an option," they conclude.
