The plenary of Santa Maria unanimously condemns the LGTBI-phobic aggression reported during the festivities

PalmaThe plenary session of the Santa Maria del Camí Town Hall unanimously approved an institutional motion of condemnation for the alleged LGTBI-phobic aggression reported during the vigil of the patron saint festivities on July 17. The text expresses "unequivocal" rejection of any act of violence or discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, and reaffirms the municipality's commitment to defending the rights of the LGTBI+ community.

The initiative was approved after several people reported being victims of insults, threats, and LGTBI-phobic aggression during the celebration. The facts remain under investigation, and the motion itself recalls that it is up to the competent authorities to determine responsibilities.

Despite this, the council stressed that, "regardless of the outcome of the investigation," any conduct motivated by hate or discrimination is "incompatible with the democratic values, coexistence, and respect" that should govern the life of the municipality.

The approved text defends that Santa Maria "must continue to be an open, inclusive, and diversity-respecting municipality" and claims that popular festivals should be "spaces for coexistence, freedom, and security," where all people can participate without fear of suffering insults, threats, or assaults.

Support for victims and strengthening of prevention measures

With the approval of the motion, the plenary session expressly condemned any aggression, threat, insult, or act of violence motivated by sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, and conveyed institutional solidarity and support to the affected individuals.

Furthermore, the City Council urged law enforcement agencies and other competent authorities to investigate the facts "with the utmost diligence" to clarify them and, where appropriate, to determine the responsibilities that correspond.

The motion also reaffirmed the council's commitment to defending the rights of the LGTBI+ community, equality, non-discrimination, and coexistence, as well as the will to continue promoting awareness, education, and prevention actions for hate crimes.

Finally, the plenary session agreed to reinforce, if necessary, information, prevention, and attention measures in the face of possible situations of violence, discrimination, or LGTBI-phobia during the patron saint festivities and other municipal events, with the aim that the public spaces of Santa Maria continue to be "safe, inclusive spaces free from any form of violence, discrimination, or hate speech". The approved agreements will be forwarded to the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Consell de Mallorca, and LGTBI rights defense entities in the archipelago.
