Concentration of condemnation in Santa Maria in the face of far-right attacks: "We cannot allow it to happen again"

PalmaDozens of people gathered this Tuesday midday in front of the Santa Maria del Camí City Council, in an act to condemn LGTB-phobic aggressions and in favor of freedom of expression and fundamental rights. For their part, the platforms Antifeixistes Mallorca and Orgull Crític Mallorca have joined the Consistory's initiative to condemn in particular the latest ultra attacks that occurred in the municipality.

The attendees exhibited flags such as 'SOS Residents', the LGBTIQA flag and the anti-fascist flag, among others. For their part, the City Council read a manifesto in which they "firmly" reject and condemn any type of aggression or discriminatory attitude.

"We will not tolerate now or ever any LGTBI-phobic, sexist conduct or conduct contrary to human rights and fundamental freedoms", the City Council has pointed out. "These events cannot happen again and, therefore, it is essential to maintain the shared commitment between the Consistory and the citizenry", they said.

Likewise, they have conveyed their support to the people who have been victims of these attacks and have assured that they will continue working so that all people can live and enjoy their town with "freedom, security and dignity", they said.

It should be recalled that both the previously mentioned platforms and the invited artists within the framework of the patron saint festivities, Lluca and Santa Servera Màrtir, reported having been victims of an LGTBI-phobic aggression during the celebration held early Saturday morning at the festivities of Santa Maria del Camí. A group of young people interrupted the performance with insults, violent attitudes, and shouts of "long live Spain," making the band visible; to the point of causing its suspension.

According to their accounts, the incidents began shortly after the concert started, when a group of people positioned themselves in front of the stage and began to verbally harass them. The artists state that they do not know if the origin of the hostility was related to the flags they had placed on the table, among which were a Palestinian flag, an SOS Residents flag, and an Antihomophobe Action flag.

Furthermore, two houses linked to the family of one of the activists arrested for the graffiti against five real estate agencies in Santa Maria del Camí appeared this Monday with graffiti of an antisemitic nature. The authors have drawn several Star of Davids next to the words 'judíos' and 'Juden'', in German, and they also tried to paint a swastika, although the drawing remained incomplete. Nevertheless, the mayor of the municipality, Nicolau Canyelles, explained to ARA Balears that the Local Police are investigating the events and hopes that, for their part, the Civil Guard will act with the same "celerity" as they did with the arrested young women. Likewise, the mayor considers that these actions were "totally orchestrated," he says. "I believe there were people from the town and some who came from outside, but they wanted to boycott the event and create fear, because they knew what they were doing and where they were going," he says.
