PalmResidents' associations in the Calatrava neighborhood have expressed their strong opposition to the felling of the beautiful shadows of the Plaza de Llorenç Villalonga They have criticized the lack of conclusive technical reports justifying the action taken by the Palma City Council. In a statement, they assert that, at present, no documents have been provided that clearly demonstrate either the condition of the trees or the need for their removal.

The affected groups have explained that they will provide a detailed technical response at the end of this month, once they have received the reports they have requested from the City Council. In the meantime, they are demanding that these documents be sent to them so they can analyze them thoroughly. According to them, during the press conference held by the City Council this Tuesday, municipal technicians acknowledged that there are no conclusive reports and that no other external experts on the matter were consulted during the drafting of the presented proposal. "We are facing a high-impact project without a sufficiently verified technical basis," they warn.

The organizations also denounce the lack of community participation from the outset, despite residents being directly affected. They emphasize that the tree felling was not on the agenda of the last meeting of the Tree Committee, preventing the issue from being addressed in the necessary depth. "We have had to confront a fait accompli and an authoritarian way of managing public conflicts, unbecoming of a democratic city council," they criticize. The groups consider the action "unprecedented" and an "extreme act of violence against Palma's natural and urban heritage," the symbolic weight of which they describe as "deeply worrying." Furthermore, they question whether the action was truly urgent and regret that it was carried out "in the current manner and at the current time," which they deem unjustified. Given this situation, they have requested an urgent meeting with the responsible councilor to clarify the facts and initiate a landscape renovation plan for the square that takes into account the preservation of the trees and community participation.
