PalmaThe National Police arrested a third man this Monday allegedly related to the arson of a home in Manacor and death threats against its residents, in a case that investigators link to a possible revenge for an economic debt.

Agents of the Judicial Police Brigade of Manacor have been able to advance in the clarification of the facts after several proceedings that have allowed determining the alleged authorship or collaboration of other people in the fire, according to the National Police. With this new arrest, investigators continue to make efforts to identify and locate all the people who may have participated in the events, so further arrests are not ruled out.

A dozen youths, in search of the residents

The events took place last Tuesday morning, when several patrols from the Citizen Security Brigade were requested due to a report of threats with a firearm at a home located on the outskirts of Manacor. According to the version provided by the Superior Police Headquarters of the Balearic Islands, two men who were inside the home explained to the agents that a dozen youths, known from the town, had shown up to demand the payment of a debt.

The youths had allegedly begun to utter death threats and one of the people who was presumably participating in the events was carrying a pistol. Fearing they might be attacked, the two residents hid and subsequently fled the house, running until they hid among some bushes. The agents initiated various procedures to try to clarify what had happened and carried out sweeps and controls at the entrances and exits of Manacor.

Meanwhile, a patrol met with the victims and accompanied them to the house where the threats had occurred. Upon arriving, the police observed smoke and flames coming from the interior. Firefighters and Local Police were already working to extinguish the fire. At that moment, one of the victims received a phone call from one of the alleged perpetrators, who had asked him to go to a point in the town to settle the debt. During the conversation, according to the Police, the man continued threatening them and went as far as to tell them: "We will kill you, we have already left you without a house".

Four outbreak points of the fire

Finally, the agents located two of the alleged perpetrators and arrested them for a crime of arson. One of them is also charged with a crime of making threats. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the Judicial Police of the Manacor Police Station, which carried out an inspection of the property with agents from the Scientific Police.

During this inspection, the investigators determined that the fire had been deliberately set and located four different points of origin for the fire. Two of these points were located at the only exit routes of the dwelling. Furthermore, one of the first detainees allegedly caused damage to the security facilities of the police station and assaulted the officers, for which he was also arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of damage and assault on authority. Regarding the third detainee, the National Police provisionally attributes a possible crime of arson to him. The investigation remains open.
