Rehabilitation of the Puig de Sant Pere wall begins with traditional techniques

PalmaThe Palma City Council has begun the works to repair and rehabilitate a section of the Puig de Sant Pere wall, an intervention that will allow the recovery of part of the structure and promote this element of the city's heritage.

The works come after the Governing Board approved a modification of the contract for the restoration and conservation of the Palma wall last April to include this section. The intervention also has the authorization of the Heritage department of the Consell de Mallorca.

The work has been postponed until now due to the characteristics of the materials to be used, as they require specific temperature conditions and cannot be applied with guarantees during extreme heat episodes.

Before starting the works, the City Council has installed tarpaulins and commissioned several technical studies to determine the state of the structure and define the most suitable materials and construction solutions. The objective is for the new intervention to be compatible with the original wall.

Tamped earth

One of the particularities of the intervention will be the recovery of materials that are already available in the area and the use of traditional construction techniques. Specifically, rammed earth or pisé will be used, a system used for centuries in different places and especially associated with areas where earth is one of the main available materials.

The technique consists of compacting damp earth, mixed with aggregates and, in some cases, stabilizers, within a wooden formwork. The mixture is placed in layers inside a wooden formwork that is moved as the wall gains height and each layer is compacted to form a solid and continuous structure.

In addition to its value as a traditional technique, rammed earth stands out for its resistance and its thermal performance.

The Femu will have a larger and more accessible play area

On the other hand, the Palma Governing Board plans to initially approve this Wednesday the project to renovate the children's play area in La Femu park, in the L'Olivera neighborhood.

The reform will make it possible to more than double the current space, which will exceed 586 square meters, and incorporate new elements designed to encourage different forms of play, exploration, and interaction.

The project, with a budget of €160,262, including VAT, has an execution period of eight weeks and will be carried out by the municipal area of Infrastructures, Accessibility and Industrial Estates.

The design of the new area has involved the participation of different entities, including the Nemo Foundation, specialized in the care of families with children and young people with difficulties in neurodevelopment or at risk of suffering them.

The reform thus seeks for the park to have a larger, more accessible and diverse play space, with different proposals adapted to the needs of children.
