PalmaMari Carmen García, a native of Inca, Mallorca, has been identified among the fatalities of the train accident that occurred this Wednesday in Urda (Toledo), as confirmed by Europa Press. The tragedy has left 69 dead, including the young woman, who lived and worked in Madrid.

The young woman was traveling on the Iryo company train bound for Seville when the accident occurred. Mari Carmen's family had reported her disappearance to the Civil Guard, which had taken DNA samples to facilitate the identification process of the victims. Her disappearance had been confirmed by sources from the town councils of Inca, the Mallorcan municipality where she is from, and Rute, in Córdoba, where her father was born and where the family maintains ties.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at 8:53 a.m., near Urda, in Toledo, when a Renfe AVE train traveling from Madrid towards Seville rear-ended an Iryo train that was stopped on the tracks. There were 531 passengers and the crews traveling on both trains. The violence of the impact caused several carriages to derail: some fell down an embankment, and the lead cars of the Renfe train and the tail cars of the Iryo train became embedded and overturned.

Initial investigations suggest that, before the collision, there had been a failure in the LZB rail safety system, which caused several trains to stop. Although the exact circumstances are still to be clarified, the preliminary technical report places the speed of the impact between 160 and 200 km/h. Emergency teams worked for hours on the rescue of the victims and the removal of the wreckage from the trains, while investigators are analyzing the black boxes and communications to reconstruct what happened before the crash.
