Joana Aina Tugores Avellà, founder of Unió de Pagesos, has died at the age of 73.

Founder of the peasant association most committed to the land and culture of the island, she was a pioneer woman in the Mallorcan peasantry.

PalmThe saddler Joana Aina Tugores Avellà has died at the age of 73. Founder of the Unió de Pagesos (Union of Pagesos), she was a pioneering woman among the peasantry of Mallorca.

In 1976, after the dictatorship, a group of small farmers in Mallorca, including Joana Aina and her husband Joan Mas Little Colt, She founded Unió de Pagesos to distance herself from landowners and better defend the interests of small farmers and connect with environmentalism.

The farmers' association mourned Togores' death on social media. "An extraordinary peasant woman, ahead of her time!" wrote Unió de Pagesos. "Safe journey to the warriors who are loyal to their village," they expressed.

Joana Tugores had a five-acre farm in Montuïri where she grew mainly vegetables. In an interview published in ARA Baleares, Tugores recalled how they came up with the idea of founding Unió de Pagesos.

She remembered her husband, who died in 2014 at the age of 65: "When he was single, he used to go to the markets to sell. When we got married, however, we heard about Mercapalma and we also took our products so they could be sold more widely. Back then we could live well, we could live every day. Antoni Janer.
