PalmaThe defense of Catalan, the denunciation of the criminalization of immigrants, the demand for decent wages and affordable housing, and the criticism of tourist excesses have turned the Bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, into an uncomfortable voice for Marga Prohens' Government. Sources close to the Executive acknowledge the unease over some of his interventions, which in some way portray the concessions of the PP to Vox, its parliamentary crutch, both for the hardening of the discourse on immigrants and for the setbacks in linguistic normalization. The latest episode has ended in an open confrontation: the Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzá, accused Taltavull of hypocrisy after the prelate recovered, in a report published in ARA Balears, a 1990 pastoral letter against the degradation of the territory and the excesses of the tourism model. It is the latest in a series of rebukes that the bishop has formulated without looking at the political color of those who govern. Taltavull has portrayed the 'sins' of the Executive.

I. December 2023. Language is a human right, even if there are those who get angry

On December 31, 2023, when Marga Prohens had been at the head of the Government for half a year, ARA Balears published an interview with Sebastià Taltavull. The conversation took place at the episcopal palace of Palma, with a significant scene in the background: from the windows, a mega-cruise ship could be seen, a symbol of the tourist imbalances that worry the bishop. The interview addressed secularization, poverty, and cultural identity. Taltavull explained a revealing anecdote: a man had entered the sacristy furiously after hearing him read a passage from the Acts of the Apostles that spoke of sharing property so that no one would go hungry. He had accused him of being a communist. The bishop had replied that he was simply reading the word of God.

One of his most forceful reflections was about the Catalan language. The context was that of the first news about Vox's attempts to lower the requirements and presence of the native language in the Administration and Education, while the PP began to make small concessions: "Language should be above politics. It is a human right".

Taltavull denounced that he had received insults and rebukes for defending the native language of Mallorca. He also warned that there are people who interpret this defense as an aggression against themselves. For the prelate, preserving cultural identity does not mean excluding anyone, but protecting a collective heritage that must be shared with newcomers. His firmness contrasted with the linguistic confrontation that marked the first months of the legislative term and portrayed in some way the sin of Marga Prohens, who was already beginning to accept the demands of Vox. The parliamentary dependence on the far-right had placed Catalan at the center of the agreements and political tensions of the Government. The bishop, however, rejected that the language could be reduced to a partisan flag. And he warned that he would not stop defending it.

II. December 2023. The lesson on Mallorcan identity before Prohens

On the last day of that same December, during the solemn mass of the Feast of the Standard at the Cathedral, Taltavull delivered a homily with President Prohens among the attending authorities. "A people without its own culture, a people that renounces what identifies it, has no future", he proclaimed.

The bishop asserted that Mallorca has historically been a people that loves, values, and promotes its own language. But immediately after, he introduced a nuance that could be interpreted as a warning about the current situation: "I would like to say it as an affirmation and not as a question, but we must make progress." It was not a minor statement. In the midst of the controversy over the Government's linguistic policies and the demands of Vox, the top representative of the Mallorcan Church reminded everyone that the language is part of the roots that define the people.

Taltavull also championed the historical role of the Church in the preservation of Catalan, especially through religious celebrations. Identity, he insisted, is not just a matter of words, but a way of living and understanding the community. The message had special symbolism due to the setting and the recipients. Political representatives of the right are, by far, those who most frequently attend ecclesiastical acts, but the December 31st celebration always presents more of an obstacle for them, because the Church has no problem asserting that the Catalan character of Mallorca and Christianity entered through the same door, on the same day.

III. October 2025. "Calling immigrants criminals is a slander"

On October 22, 2025, one of the bishop's toughest interventions arrived. In a press conference with social entities linked to the Church to address homelessness, Taltavull denounced hate speech and the criminalization of immigrants. "Calling them criminals is a slander, a very serious accusation against people who have had to leave their homes," he warned.

The forcefulness of his words contrasted with the prelate's usually measured language. Taltavull did not limit himself to asking for solidarity: he described an attitude increasingly present in public debate as morally inadmissible. The bishop was especially concerned about the social rejection suffered by people who arrive in Mallorca after experiencing dramatic situations. And he pointed out the paradox that this rejection could come from well-off people, who live well and have no material shortages.

The statements came amidst the controversy over reception centers for migrant minors. Taltavull explained that some spaces that the Church had made available to the administrations had not been able to come into operation due to social rejection. Both the PP and Vox had opposed the opening of certain reception resources and, in the case of the conservatives, the arrival of irregular immigrants was used as an instrument to criticize Pedro Sánchez's policies.

The political response was not long in coming. The next day, Vox deputy in Congress Jorge Campos replied that he should host the minors in his episcopal palace. The contrast was evident: while part of the right wing emphasized the rejection of certain reception facilities, Taltavull reminded that migrants are, above all, people with rights and dignity. Once again, the bishop's warning challenged the political discourse on immigration head-on and recalled an elemental demand of the Christian faith: one cannot dehumanize those who suffer.

IV. Christmas 2025. Charity is not enough: fair wages and affordable rents are needed

On the night of December 24, 2025, during matins at the Cathedral of Mallorca, Taltavull spoke once again about people who are struggling. In a Christmas message that IB3 covered the following day, he called for sensitivity towards those who suffer the most, especially the victims of forced migration. But he also brought to the table two of the great daily difficulties faced by residents of the Balearic Islands: insufficient wages and access to housing.

The bishop advocated for fair wages, affordable rents, and material conditions that allow for living with dignity. The reflection connected with a contradiction in the Balearic economy: the strength of tourism activity coexists with workers who have trouble accessing housing or making ends meet.

Taltavull did not present an alternative economic program to the Government's, nor did he criticize a specific measure by Prohens. However, his intervention served as a reminder that prosperity cannot be valued solely in terms of economic growth. It must also be measured by the ability to guarantee a dignified life for the population. The prelate went, in this way, beyond charity and placed the focus on an economic model that generates ever more inequality: an undeniable reality, but one that no government official likes to admit they have been unable to stop.

V. December 2025. Twenty million visitors and more than 7,000 migrants

A week later, on December 31, 2025, Taltavull again took advantage of the Estendard homily to pose a question of enormous political weight. In the text delivered at the Cathedral, before the authorities, he recalled that Mallorca had to manage the visit of more than 20 million people over the course of almost a year. And he placed this reality alongside another: the arrival of more than 7,000 migrants in precarious conditions, some after journeys in which other people had lost their lives.

"Faced with the reception of millions of tourists and visitors, the question is how we welcome the more than 7,000 [migrants]," the bishop proposed. The comparison was especially incisive in the Balearic Islands. A society that has organized much of its economy to receive millions of people from all over the world finds itself immersed in a debate about the limits and conditions of the reception of those who arrive without resources.

Taltavull acknowledged the humanitarian work being done on the Islands and accepted that immigration needs legal regulation. But he argued that any policy must start from an attitude free of prejudices and threats. He also demanded that institutions put the person at the center and that those in government act with responsibility towards the most vulnerable.

To reinforce the message, he recovered words from Pope Francis about politics as a service to the common good. In particular, he recalled that public officials must be concerned with the fragility of people and social exclusion, above electoral concerns. The homily also incorporated a defense of the Mallorcan identity and the Catalan language. But the bishop did not present this identity as a wall against newcomers: he advocated that they be able to know it, participate in it, and enrich it with their contributions.

Taltavull also proposed creating a permanent table of dialogue for peace, inclusion, and coexistence. It was a call to replace insults and polarization with listening and agreement.

VI. October and November 2026. Tourist greed causes the Government to collapse

The latest controversy has arisen following a report by Antoni Janer published on October 31, 2026, in ARA Balears, titled A bishop against tourist greed. In it, Taltavull recovers a pastoral letter from 1990, titled Ecology and tourism in our Islands. Guidelines for Christian action, in the preparation of which he participated when he was vicar general of Menorca. The document, signed jointly by the three bishops of the Balearic Islands, warned of the excesses of tourism growth and the territorial, social, and cultural consequences of a poorly regulated economic model.

The Menorcan recalls that his environmentalist commitment dates back to the 70s, when he participated in mobilizations for the defense of the territory. His concern about overcrowding is, therefore, not a position acquired during Prohens' presidency. In the report, Taltavull argues that the protection of the territory is linked to the defense of people, identity, and language. And he maintains that the excesses of capitalism must be regulated to prevent the population from suffering the consequences. Another slap on the wrist from the Mallorcan Church to the economic model and the Government's lack of results.

The Government's response was particularly harsh. In a message posted on X, the Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzá, accused the bishop of hypocrisy for denouncing overcrowding while the Church earns income from tourist activity. Bauzá, who is not remembered for any other altercation with anyone other than a political opponent, reproached him for his criticism of the presence of cyclists at the Lluc sanctuary and of cruise passengers arriving in Palma, some of whom visit the Cathedral. He also recalled that there is a file regarding alleged irregularities related to 268 tourist beds marketed in Lluc.

"Perhaps greed is easier to recognize when viewed from someone else's bell tower," retorted the minister, who was soon criticized by Terraferida: "The minister will have spent four years without making any criticism of investment funds, nor of illegal tourist rentals, nor of large hotel companies, nor of anyone who makes money by tearing Mallorca apart. Now, anyone who dares to make the slightest criticism of the insane model we have will receive his wrath," said the environmental organization.

Bauzá argued that the Church has the right to warn about tourist excesses, but that it should apply the same moral requirement to the activities that generate income for it. He also questioned Taltavull's prominence in the 1990 pastoral letter and recalled that that document was signed by the bishops of the time. However, his anger and his manner surprised even a part of the Government, which admitted to "not having coordinated" the tweet.
