PalmaRed Eléctrica will begin the works to bury the final section of the 66 kV power line between the Sant Martí and Alcúdia substations during the second half of October. The action will allow for space to be cleared for the future converter station of the second submarine power link between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
The project involves replacing a 403-metre overhead section, which currently crosses the land where the facility is to be built, with a new 570-metre underground route.
According to Red Eléctrica, the works will begin after obtaining the favourable environmental impact statement from the Balearic Government, the prior administrative and construction authorisation, and the declaration of public utility. The company also states that it has reached amicable agreements with all the owners of the affected land.
This action is the first project linked to the second power link between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands to have obtained a favourable environmental impact statement. However, this does not mean that the new interconnection already has all the necessary permits to be executed.
The second link is still in the environmental processing stage
The PenBal 2 project, which provides for a second underwater electrical connection between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, continues in the environmental assessment phase before the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The processing comes after a second period of public information, motivated by the modification of the terrestrial route. The new proposal was agreed upon in a working group in which the Balearic Government, the Ministry, the Council of Mallorca, the Alcúdia City Council, neighborhood representatives, and Red Eléctrica participated.
The burying of the existing line is, therefore, a prior action to facilitate the future construction of the converter station in Alcúdia, an infrastructure necessary for the operation of the new link. The development of the interconnection will depend on the continuation of the environmental and administrative processing of the global project.
