PalmaThe archaeological excavations at the Talayotic site of Son Mas del Potecari, in Inca, continue to provide new clues about the history of the monument. The sixth campaign of interventions has allowed for the location and documentation of part of a perimeter ring of the tumulus, a finding that will help researchers better understand the architectural configuration of the structure.

The Inca City Council presented this Thursday the results of the work carried out during 2026, which have also allowed for the confirmation of some of the hypotheses proposed in previous campaigns. Furthermore, archaeologists have identified signs of a possible structure predating the monument, which is currently under study and could provide new information about the historical evolution of the site.

The Councilor for Culture of Inca, Alice Weber, has highlighted that the results obtained demonstrate that Son Mas del Potecari "still has many things to tell".

A site with more than 3,000 years of history

Son Mas del Potecari has been known since the beginning of the 20th century and has its origins around the year 1000 BC, during the Talayotic period. However, the documented remains indicate that the site continued to be occupied in later eras, up until the Andalusian period.

The scheduled archaeological interventions began in 2017 and combine scientific research with the conservation and recovery of the heritage site. This year's campaign has been promoted by the Inca City Council, with the support of the Council of Mallorca and the collaboration of the estate's owners.

Archaeologists, restorers, and heritage specialists have participated in the work. In addition to the excavations, restoration tasks, cataloging of remains, and topographic surveys have been carried out, as well as actions aimed at consolidating the stepped mounds of the site.

Work to prevent the deterioration of the structures

A large part of the campaign has focused on the conservation of the site, especially in the southwest and north sectors. In these areas, the teams have controlledly removed roots and wild olive stumps that were affecting the exterior walls.

These interventions have been carried out progressively since 2021 with the aim of preventing vegetation from damaging the archaeological structures. To do this, techniques compatible with the monument's original construction characteristics are used, among which dry stone and lime mortar stand out.

The combination of new excavations and restoration tasks allows for progress both in the knowledge of Son Mas del Potecari and in the preservation of a heritage complex that can still provide information about the communities that inhabited Mallorca from prehistory to later periods.
