PalmaThe mayor of Manacor, Miquel Oliver, the delegate for Education of the City Council, Ferran Montero, and the municipal technician for Education, met this Monday afternoon with the Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, to request explanations about the implementation of the single school zone in the municipality.

The meeting had been previously requested by the City Council with the aim of knowing what criteria the Government had followed to apply this new schooling model in Manacor. The implementation of the single zone from the 2026-2027 academic year has been carried out without taking into account either the City Council or the educational community.

This meeting also responds to one of the demands expressed by the management teams of the educational centers in the municipality, who have expressed their concern about a system that they consider has not been agreed upon with the territory.

Currently, Manacor has a school zoning system structured into four zones: Manacor city, s'Illot, Porto Cristo, and Son Macià. According to the City Council, this model has contributed to maintaining the link of the students with their population centers and to ensuring a certain balance in the distribution among centers.

In this regard, the council warns that the implementation of the single zone may not only jeopardize this territorial rootedness but also generate difficulties in terms of school transport.

From the Manacor City Council, it is argued that the current zoning model has so far allowed a more balanced distribution of students among centers, contributing to avoiding school segregation processes. The council considers that the new order may jeopardize this balance and alter the cohesion of the local educational system, among other disadvantages.

Given this situation, the City Council has already announced the adoption of legal measures against the regulations promoted by the Government. In fact, the municipal plenary session scheduled for this Tuesday includes on its agenda the approval of the prior requirement against this order.

The implementation of the single school zone is a measure promoted by the Balearic Government that eliminates traditional zoning. Various sectors of the educational community have expressed doubts about its effects, especially regarding equity in student distribution and the risk of increasing school segregation.
