PalmaThe courts of the Balearic Islands received a total of 2,098 complaints for gender-based violence during the second quarter of 2026, 12.1% more than in the same period of the previous year, when 1,878 were registered. The figures are equivalent to an average of 23 daily complaints and place the Islands as the territory with the highest rate of victims reporting sexist violence in the entire State.
This is clear from the data published this Friday by the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), collected by Europa Press, which also indicates that between April and June, 1,846 women were registered as victims of gender-based violence in the Archipelago. This figure represents an increase of 8.1% compared to the second quarter of 2025.
The rate of reporting victims per 10,000 women was 29.4 in the Balearic Islands, more than nine points above the national average, which is 20. Furthermore, the indicator continues to rise, as during the same period last year it was 27.6 victims per 10,000 women.
The CGPJ report also notes that 273 women victims of gender-based violence took advantage of the exemption from the duty to testify against their aggressor between April and June. This figure represents 14.8% of the total number of victims registered during the quarter and involves an 18% reduction compared to the women who opted for this possibility in the same period of 2025. The exemption from the duty to testify allows victims to exercise their right not to testify against the aggressor in cases provided for by law.
Protection orders decrease
Regarding protection measures, the courts of the Balearic Islands received 408 applications for protection orders during the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents a decrease of 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. Of these applications, judicial bodies adopted 318, 5.1% less than in 2025. The orders granted represent 78% of the total requested.
The rate of protection orders adopted for every 100 women victims of gender-based violence stood at 22.1 during the quarter. The CGPJ data thus reflect an increase in complaints and in the number of women victims of sexist violence in the Balearic Islands, which maintain the highest rate in the State, while applications and protection orders record a slight year-on-year decrease.
