PalmaThe struggle between sectors favoring Vicenç Vidal and Carme Gomila to lead the Ara Més candidacy for Congress is intensifying. Although the woman from Manacor is the choice of the permanent executive of MÉS per Mallorca and has the support of Més per Menorca and Ara Eivissa, the cadres favoring the current Sumar-Més deputy in Congress are pushing for the MÉS per Mallorca assembly, where Vidal has the option to gather a good portion of the votes, to propose a candidate.
According to party sources, the intention of the permanent executive of MÉS per Mallorca was to choose the head of the list without going through the party assembly, which would have left the way clear for Gomila. However, at last Monday's leadership meeting, those loyal to Vidal demanded that the membership vote. This is Vidal's only way to impose her candidacy, as she gathers the support of a large part of the members and, especially, of the sector critical of Lluís Apesteguia's leadership.
Gomila, for her part, has the approval of the officialist sector, as well as that of the party's youth wing, the group that during this term has been most critical of Vidal's management in Congress. The former councilor and leader of Esquerra in the Islands also has the support of Més per Menorca, which in the past has also questioned Vidal: the Menorcan assembly demanded in July 2025, with 83% of the votes, that she leave the Sumar parliamentary group in Congress to join the mixed group. In parallel, the former councilor maintains good relations with Ara Eivissa, which has roots in Esquerra.
The parties are now debating whether it is up to MÉS per Mallorca to submit a proposal ratified exclusively by its membership to the Federal Council, which threatens Gomila's position, or whether this decision corresponds to Ara Més as a whole, which would make her path easier. When asked last Monday, Apesteguia remarked that "the list is made by the federal council of Ara Més, and it is a collegiate decision": "There is no preeminence of any formation". Sources from Més per Menorca claim that both their assembly and that of Ibiza set as a condition that the candidate should emerge from the joint decision of the federation. However, behind closed doors this was not so clear, and for this reason the leadership will meet today for the second time to address the issue.
"The order of factors alters the product", summarizes an official from MÉS per Mallorca. Both candidates have played a leading role in the creation of Ara Més. While Gomila is its spokesperson and has led the negotiations to form a coalition with the Broad Front and Podemos —which has finally been left out of the equation—, Vidal was key to unblocking the talks with Sumar and Esquerra Unida regarding who should occupy the starting position in Congress and how the coalition should be integrated into the Broad Front's parliamentary group.
