The viral video sweeping social media: "The Catalan spoken in Mallorca is the best in the world."
Catalan comedian Edu de Guirior has made a video in which he claims to have fallen in love with the Mallorcan language and asks for it to be exported to Catalonia.
PalmHeCatalan comedian Edu de Guiriorhas made a video on her Instagram profile where he asserts that "the Catalan spoken in Mallorca is the best in the world." He emphasizes the accent that distinguishes the Catalan spoken by residents of the principality.
"Spanish, Balearic, Majorcan, salty... I don't care what you want to call it, but it's the best. In this sense, he emphasizes the open vowels, the way the words are intoned and assures that it is a "sexy" accent. "What is he looking for? Is he insinuating himself? He wants sex, mambo, party?" the comedian quips.
Faced with the infatuation with the Catalan dialect spoken in Mallorca, Edu de Guirior proposes an initiative to make it known in Catalonia. "People normally go on exchanges in the United States, but forget about that, do an exchange with Catalans," says the comedian. "Go, but come to Catalonia and bring this Catalan," he concludes.
Comments on the post were immediate. Some joked that many Catalans claim they "don't understand Mallorcans when they chat, but then say they fall in love with the accent." There were also the typical comments claiming that people in Mallorca don't speak Catalan, but rather Mallorcan. However, the vast majority thanked the comedian for giving visibility to the Catalan spoken in Mallorca.
