PalmaCarme Gomila will be the candidate for Ara Més-Front Ampli to the Congress of Deputies for the general elections on November 29th. The federal committee of Ara Més ratified and officially proclaimed the candidacy of the woman from Manacor this Saturday, after the assembly of MÉS per Mallorca had endorsed it and agreed to elevate the proposal to the federal body.
As ARA Balears reported a few days ago, Gomila has accepted the candidacy with the commitment to defend the interests of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera in state institutions. "We have an essential contribution to make: to bring a voice of our own, rooted in this land, to the State institutions," she stated.
The candidate has claimed the need for the Balearic Islands to have political representation in Madrid that understands the territory's problems and is accountable to the public. In this sense, she has placed access to housing, the consequences of overcrowding, and the lack of decision-making power over issues that affect the daily lives of residents among the main challenges that the candidacy will have to face. Gomila has also called for unity and the involvement of the membership to face the electoral process. "I understand this candidacy as a shared responsibility, which only makes sense if we are capable of assuming it collectively," she assured.
The new candidate also dedicated words of recognition to Vicenç Vidal, who has been the deputy for the Balearic sovereignists in Congress during this term. Gomila highlighted his trajectory of public service and the work carried out in defense of the Islands. With this Saturday's ratification, the eco-sovereignists close the internal process of designating the person who will head the Ara Més-Front Ampli candidacy in the general elections.
Gomila, born in Manacor in 1994, holds a degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Pompeu Fabra University and a master's degree in Political Communication from Ramon Llull University. She was a councilor at Manacor City Council between 2019 and 2023, is the president of Esquerra Republicana in the Balearic Islands, and is the head of Strategy and Political Relations for MÉS per Mallorca. The Ara Més-Front Ampli candidacy groups together MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca, and Ara Eivissa, together with Esquerra Unida de les Illes Balears, Movimiento Sumar, Recortes Cero, and Progreso en Verde.
According to the agreed distribution, the numbers two and four on the ticket will correspond to the Broad Front parties, while the remaining spots will be for the sovereignists. The coalition will thus face the November 29 elections with Gomila at the helm and with the demand for the Islands' own representation in Congress, focused on the issues that affect the citizenry and on the capacity to decide on the future of the territory.
